  • administrative law: acting for both public institutions and statutory boards;
  • banking and securities disputes: acting for financial institutions in advisory roles as well as in litigation matters, including bank-customer disputes, employee disputes and inter-bank disputes. The firm currently represents United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) in claims against a subsidiary of the Lippo Group for fraud and conspiracy arising out of Lippo’s sale of housing units in Sentosa Cove which were financed by UOB;
  • corporate disputes: examples of the work we have regularly undertaken include shareholders’ or partners’ disputes, joint venture disputes and claims against directors and other officers of the company;
  • fraud investigations: notable investigations include those commissioned by the Singapore Exchange into China Aviation’s oil trading losses of US$550 million. The firm has also advised on a number other confidential enquiries conducted by the Singapore Exchange;
  • hospitality disputes: the firm acted for Starwood Asia Pacific Hotels & Resorts Pte Ltd and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc in relation to claims arising out of the proposed acquisition of the Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok;
  • intellectual property disputes: the firm has acted in copyright and passing off claims taking place in highly sensitive factual context;
  • property disputes: including various landmark decisions on adverse possession;
  • family law: including adoption, divorce, custody care and control of minor children, maintenance and division of matrimonial assets including the landmark case in Singapore on stock options being part of matrimonial assets;
  • telecommunications disputes: the firm has represented SingTel in a variety of matters including the very highly publicised litigation between SingTel and Starhub Cable Vision Ltd (SCV) in relation to the unauthorised tapping off of SingTel’s cable network by Starhub Cable Vision Ltd, which resulted in a favourable outcome for SingTel;
  • arbitration: we have a sizeable team of lawyers with substantial arbitration experience. Our depth of experience ensures that we have the ability to provide the best legal representation for our clients in arbitrations irrespective of the nature of the issues in dispute. To this end, our lawyers regularly contest both domestic and international arbitrations, and have seen the length and breadth of arbitrable disputes ranging from major infrastructure disputes to telecommunication disputes to private banking claims. We are also well versed in the various arbitration rules published by leading arbitral bodies such as the International Chamber of Commerce, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, to name a few. Furthermore, a number of our lawyers are fellows or members of key arbitral institutions and bodies;
  • adjudication: substantial growth has been seen over the last few years, especially with respect to the building and construction industry. We have successfully represented our client in the first adjudication hearing in Singapore pursuant to the Building and Construction Security of Payment Act and we continue to regularly assist clients resolve disputes through adjudication; and
  • mediation and negotiation: there may be times when a non-confrontational settlement is in the best interests of a client. Such commercially driven dispute resolution procedures are regularly spearheaded by our lawyers to assist and ensure that our clients achieve the desired outcome to a problem. Such alternative procedures would include institutional and ad hoc mediations, and negotiations.
